Hardie Siding Maintenance: Simple Tips to Keep It Looking New
August 25, 2026 · 4 min read · Hammer Exteriors

Fiber cement is low-maintenance — not no-maintenance. Here's the easy yearly routine.
Wash Once or Twice a Year
A garden hose and soft brush with mild soap is all you need. Avoid high-pressure washing close to the surface, which can damage the finish.
Inspect Caulk and Trim
Check caulk joints around windows, doors and trim each spring. Re-seal any gaps to keep water out.
A Simple Seasonal Checklist
Fiber cement is low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. A quick walk around the house each season helps you catch small issues early and keeps your siding warranty in good standing.
- Spring: rinse siding with a garden hose and soft brush
- Summer: trim shrubs and vines back from the walls
- Fall: clean gutters so water doesn't spill onto siding
- Winter: keep snow piles and de-icing salt away from the bottom course
Caulk, Trim and Touch-Ups
Inspect caulk joints around windows, doors and trim every year or two. Caulk is the first line of defense against water, and replacing a worn bead is quick and inexpensive. Small chips in ColorPlus finish can be touched up with matching paint from the manufacturer.
Avoid high-pressure washing directly into seams or at close range — it can force water behind the boards and damage the finish.
Why Gutters Matter for Siding
Clogged or undersized gutters dump water down the face of your home, staining siding and soaking the walls behind it. Seamless gutters with gutter guards are one of the best investments you can make to protect new siding.
Keep Gutters Clear
Overflowing gutters dump water directly onto siding. Clean gutters and properly sized downspouts protect your entire exterior.
- Trim shrubs so they don't rub against siding
- Keep sprinklers aimed away from walls
- Maintain proper clearance between siding and soil or mulch
